France: Prime Minister Bourne offers her resignation to Macron, who rejects it

French Prime Minister Elizabeth Bourne has made her resignation known to the country’s president, Emanuel Macron, following the results of the parliamentary elections that deprived the center-right Ensemble bloc of an independent majority in the National Assembly.

However, the French head of state, who began his second five-year term after being re-elected to the post in May, rejected the resignation of the head of government, who took office just a month ago.

The Bourne government will face a difficult situation in the National Assembly, lower body of the French parliament, as the second largest coalition, the left-wing NUPES of Jean-Luc Melanson, announced on Monday that it will submit a motion of censure on July 5.

The central bloc Ensemble has 245 deputies, while the absolute majority needs 289 (out of a total of 577). It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.

Should that happen, the prime minister and his government will have to resign, and President Macron will have to form a new government, but he will have to secure parliamentary alliances in order to stay in power and legislate.

The President of France has the right to dissolve the National Assembly and call early parliamentary elections, but not more often than once a year.

Em. Macron is expected to meet with leaders of the parliamentary parties that will form a parliamentary group in the new National Assembly, in order to explore the possibilities of forming a parliamentary majority to support the government.
