France is ready “to go further” and ban Russian oil, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire told CNN this Friday (8).
Le Maire called the attack on a railway station in Kramatorsk, Ukraine, which left at least 50 dead, “a massacre” and said those responsible must be “identified, prosecuted and possibly convicted of these crimes”.
France did not want to wait and the oil ban would be a “game changer”, Le Maire said, but added that European unity is needed to implement tougher energy sanctions.
“As far as France is concerned, we are ready to go further and decide on a ban on oil and I am deeply convinced that the next steps and the next discussions will focus on this issue of banning Russian oil,” he said.
Le Maire emphasized that the current sanctions agreed by the European Union were very effective and “the heaviest since the creation of the EU”.
