At least 64 communities in France recorded record high temperatures today, as the heat wave hitting the country reaches its peak.
According to Météo France, very high temperatures were recorded mainly at the 690 measuring stations maintained by the meteorological service along the Atlantic coast. An all-time record was set in the Land region, where in the village of Biskaros the thermometer showed 42.6°C today. In the north, near the port of Havre, the temperature reached 38.2°C. It was even higher in Noirmoutier (39.7), while the situation was a little better in the Ye Islands, with 35.9 degrees.
“Unfortunately, it was to be expected,” meteorologist Mathieu Sorel told AFP, explaining that heatwaves are multiplying and intensifying due to climate change. It is also significant that the temperatures recorded in recent days are much higher than previous records. “More than 4 degrees (difference from the previous record) in Brest is colossal,” he said, explaining that in Brittany the previous record was set in August 2003 and was 35.1 degrees, while yesterday the mercury reached 39.3 grades.
