The chairman of the Culture Committee of the French Senate, Laurent Lafon, has written a letter to the chairman of the French audiovisual regulatory authority, Ross-Olivier Mestre, requesting the suspension of the television station and the website Russia Today in France. According to the newspaper Le Figaro, in his letter he stressed that the two Russian media outlets broadcast “daily” the “propaganda actions” of the Kremlin, “without real contradiction”, noting, among other things, the transmission of the words of the Russian president, who refer to “the genocide of the Russian population in eastern Ukraine and the threat posed by terrorism” to justify its military operation “illegal under international law”.
“It is urgent to ask about the threat posed by this communication tool of the Russian government to our democratic values, in the light of the new situation created by the outbreak of military operations in Ukraine. I believe that the propaganda that is being transmitted today by Russia “Today he threatens all these authorities and fully justifies the suspension of this service,” the French senator stressed, according to the newspaper.
