The Saudi man arrested in France on Tuesday on suspicion of involvement in the murder of journalist Jamal Kasogi is not wanted by Turkey and has been released, the Paris attorney general said tonight.
The man was arrested on the basis of an international arrest warrant issued by the Turkish judicial authorities on November 5, 2018. However, his identification revealed that he was not the wanted person but a mere synonym, according to a source close to the investigation.
“It was an almost perfect synonym. She looked like the suspect and the details matched: same month, year and place of birth,” the source added, requesting anonymity.
The Saudi was to board a flight to Riyadh from Roissy-Charles de Gaulle Airport. However, when he gave his passport, under the name “Khaled al-Otaibi”, the “red alarm” of Interpol was activated.
The Saudi embassy in Paris has been saying since yesterday that “this citizen has nothing to do” with Kasogi’s assassination and has demanded his immediate release. A source in the Saudi security services even stated that “the real Khaled al-Otaibi and all the accused in the case are imprisoned in the kingdom”.
“There are hundreds of Saudis with the same name,” he said.
