France says all its troops fighting Islamists in Mali have now withdrawn

LAST UPDATE: 17.49

France announced today that all of its troops fighting Islamist militants in Mali since 2013 have now left the country, following a decision to withdraw in February amid worsening relations between Paris and Bamako.

France and its military allies had said at the time that after almost a decade of staying in Mali fighting Islamists in the West African region, they would move to Niger.

“As of this morning… this redeployment has been implemented with the departure from Mali of the last French soldier of Operation Barkhane,” the Elysee Palace said in a statement.

“France remains committed to the Sahel, the Gulf of Guinea and the Lake Chad region with all partners for stability and the fight against terrorism,” Elysée’s statement said.

Coups in Mali, Chad and Burkina Faso have weakened France’s alliances in its former colonies, emboldened jihadists who control large swathes of desert and scrubland, and opened the door to greater Russian influence.
