France sends 31 tonnes of vegetable seeds to Ukraine to deal with food crisis

France, the EU’s largest producer of agricultural products, has launched 31 tonnes of vegetable seeds for sowing in Ukraine, after supplying 600 tonnes of potato seeds for planting between April and May, the foreign ministry said today.

The aid is intended to deal with the “devastating effects of the Russian invasion” on Ukraine’s food security and was provided by French companies specializing in the production and distribution of seeds, the foreign ministry said.

The recently transported vegetable seeds (banjars, carrots, cabbages, tomatoes …) will cover more than 95,000 acres of agricultural land and vegetable gardens and bring in a harvest of 260,000 tonnes of agricultural products, the ministry added.

“France is making every effort to offer its support to Ukraine and to allow it to continue sowing and reaping its crops in order to ensure the food security of the country and its customers,” the statement said.

The war waged by the Russians in Ukraine has serious consequences for the country’s agriculture and also deprives the world of cereals and fertilizers, significantly increases prices and threatens to starve millions of people around the world.

President Emanuel Macron said on Thursday that France was assisting Romania in the transit of large quantities of cereals trapped in Ukraine, in the absence of an agreement that would allow those quantities to be exported across the Black Sea due to the Russian blockade.
