In France A mandatory ten-day quarantine will be applied to all travelers from Brazil, Argentina and South Africa due to concerns about mutated coronavirus strains, the government has announced.
Flights connecting France with Argentina, Chile and South Africa will continue, while Paris announced on Tuesday the suspension of air connections with Brazil to prevent the spread of the selected P1, a variant strain of the new coronavirus identified for the first time in Brazilian territory and is considered much more contagious and dangerous. This suspension is extended until Friday, April 23rd.
Explaining the rationale for continuing flights to and from Argentina, Chile and South Africa, Paris argued that the spread of SARS-CoV-2 variants in those countries was not “at the level observed in Brazil”. But travelers from these three countries, as well as those from Brazil, are now subject to isolation for 10 days, limiting the time they will be allowed to go out and increasing fines in cases of violations.
These measures, which will be implemented gradually and will come into full force on Saturday, April 24, also apply to travelers from Guyana, while systematic antigen tests (s.s. rapid tests) will be performed on those traveling to or from the Antilles via Guyana.
The observance of the quarantine will be controlled by the gendarmerie or the police in the residences of the interested parties and an “increase of the fines” is foreseen in case of “violations”, clarified the services of the Prime Minister Jean Castex.
In addition, from 24 April onwards, only nationals of the country, their spouses and children, citizens of EU member states or a third country with a permanent residence in France will be allowed to enter France.
Those wishing to board flights to France will also be required to have a PCR (polymerase chain reaction, molecular test) certificate with a negative result that must have been made up to 36 hours before (instead of 72 today). Upon arrival, antigens will be tested before passengers leave the airport.
The measures were announced while “the epidemiological situation is stabilizing” in French territory, always during the services of Mr. Castex. It will be discussed with France’s partners in the EU “at the beginning of the week” and other countries may expand the list, according to the criteria of the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC).
