France: Three suspects arrested for attacking police in Cannes

French police have arrested three people linked to a man suspected of attacking the crew of a police patrol in Cannes on Monday, French media reported today, citing police sources.

The newspaper Le Parisien added that the country’s anti-terrorism prosecutor has not yet launched an investigation.

“These are close contacts, one of them was working for him and the other was hosting him,” a police source said, adding that the perpetrator had a small construction company, a source close to the police investigation told AFP today.

“We are investigating the motives of the perpetrator,” the source added.

On Monday morning, a police officer at the wheel of a patrol car was injured when he was attacked with a knife in front of the police station in Cannes, in southeastern France, by a man who said he had committed the act “in the name of the Prophet”.

According to the BFM network and the website of the newspaper Le Figaro, the suspect had Algerian citizenship.

BFM TV added that the man was not known to the French authorities, while according to Le Figaro, the suspect had a residence permit in Italy.

Both sources said he was born in 1984.

According to Interior Minister Gerald Darmanen, the prevailing scenario is that of “terrorist” action.

The sources of the French Agency clarified that the policeman “was saved thanks to the fact that he was wearing a bulletproof vest”, as the perpetrator stabbed him “at the height of the chest”.

BFMTV, citing its own sources close to law enforcement, said earlier that the perpetrator opened the door of a patrol car parked in front of the police station and stabbed the man in the driver’s seat. He then tried to stab a second police officer inside the vehicle while making the round of the vehicle, but a third police officer inside the car shot him, seriously injuring him.

The attack took place around 06:30 (local time; 07:30 Greek time).

The attack came as French concerns about terrorism and violent crime may play a role in the run-up to the 2022 presidential election.
