France: Tourism in Paris reaches pre-pandemic levels

The French capital is once again full of tourists, with an influx approaching pre-pandemic numbers, despite a sharp absence of Chinese and Russian tourists, the city of Paris announced today.

The tourist attendance at the Grand Palace, from January to May 2022, is estimated at 12.1 million visitors, compared to 15.1 million in the same period of 2019, Deputy Mayor for Tourism Frederic Okrandr announced at a press conference.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this number had dropped to 3.7 million in 2021.

During the same period, an average of 24,000 people a day visited the Eiffel Tower in 2022, the pre-pandemic attendance level.

Foreign visitors, who account for 79.9% of the tourist flow in the French capital, significantly boosted the recovery. Among them, the Americans come first (12.7%), followed by the Germans (5.8%), the British (5.7%) and the Spaniards (4.2%).

Without figures, the Asian market, mainly the Chinese, is still collapsing due to restrictions on leaving the country, said the director general of the Paris Tourism Office, Corinne Menego.

As for the absence of Russian tourists, who accounted for “3% to 4%” of visitors in previous years in Paris, “the impact is not significant even though they are people who tend to spend,” he added.
