French far-right leader Marine Le Pen said on Sunday (7) that France had “lost another year” to reduce immigration, insecurity and discuss purchasing power, after her party, the National Rally (RN), suffered a blow against left-wing rivals in legislative elections.
Poll projections, based on early results, showed the RN coming in third place, behind the left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) coalition and Macron’s centrist camp, although the RN had been leading the polls until Sunday’s vote (7).
“The quagmire I warned about has become reality. France will be completely blocked with three groups that have more or less the same influence in the National Assembly,” Le Pen told reporters.
Sunday’s results were also a blow to centrist President Emmanuel Macron, who called the election after his group was defeated in last month’s European Parliament election.
The election will leave the French parliament divided into three broad groups – the left, the centrists and the far right, with vastly different platforms and no tradition of working together.
