Francesco Di Raimondo: “The value of independence”

Despite Fabio, the character he plays in the second season of I wanted to be a rock star on Rai2, is the result of an invention, Francesco Di Raimondo he is still amazed at how certain spectators contact him on social media, mistaking him for him. «When, in the fourth episode, Fabio is beaten by Antonio, I happened to receive messages asking me if I was okay. If before I was dumbfounded, over time I realized that, if comments like this arrive, it means that I have done something good “, Francesco says on the phone from his home in Rome, warning me that his two cats, Kyra and Rio, they are likely to reveal their presence soon by meowing and asking for treats. After a long apprenticeship at the theater, some forays into the cinema (as in All the money in the world by Ridley Scott) and on television (as Made in Italy And The Doctors 2), the great opportunity for Francesco Di Raimondo comes thanks to the character of Fabio, homosexual artist who is all too sure of himself who manages to kidnap the heart of Eros (Riccardo Maria Manera) in the wonderful fiction directed by Matteo Oleotto, who managed not only to make the right three-dimensional relationship between couples, but also to touch strings that hardly the productions Rai have the courage to pinch.

Do you like living alone with your cats?
“When I reached a certain age, I felt the need for independence. I think that everyone should have an experience alone in life: being with oneself can be very useful ».

This is a common trait with Fabio.
“True. I am quite independent while being very attached to the people I love. Exactly like Fabio ».

Eros and Fabio in I wanted to be a rock star 2

Did you expect such a warm welcome from fans of the series?
“When a character enters the race it’s always a risk, so I can’t help but feel very lucky.”

In his look and movements, his Fabio reminded me a little of Jack Sparrow: do you agree?
“It’s a compliment, because Johnny Depp is Johnny Depp. I liked the fact that Fabio has an unusual look for the characters we are used to seeing on Italian TV: it is a novelty that adds something more to his story ».

Let’s also say it’s new the way I wanted to be a rock star chooses to face homosexual love over other productions.
«For me and Riccardo, in fact, it was a challenge: we wanted to make that love credible in everything, from the scenes of sweetness to sexual tension. The fact that it was appreciated makes me happy because it means that we have done a good job. The goal, after all, was to tell a love story. Whether it is two boys is relative ».

The risk is that the spectators confuse the character with the person, as happened to Federico Cesari in SKAM Italy.
“I don’t think it depends on playing a homosexual character, but on the audience that identifies you with your character.”

Did Avance have them?
“Yes, but not just as kids. I recognize that I had a cultural bias: I thought that Fabio’s strong manner would only attract a certain type of audience because I believed in identification. Instead, I get a lot of messages from girls ».

Do compliments embarrass you?
“It depends. Generally speaking, they make me happy: I’m a bit insecure and I’m looking for confirmation ».

On his Instagram profile he posts several photos in which he shows the body: is it a way to compensate for that insecurity?
«Contrary to what appears from my profile, I am very shy: this is why playing a character as self-confident as Fabio was a great challenge. I am aware of myself, of my physical appearance, but I have elements of insecurity in my character that do not go away for now ».

Were there already these insecurities as a boy?
«They are the result of a journey made within me: fortunately I have overcome some dynamics».
