Francia Raisa reflects on the impact of donating a kidney to Selena Gomez

The 35-year-old actress made the donation after the singer faced complications arising from lupus in 2017. Although she was the target of buzz about an alleged feud between the two, she ignored the criticism and feels “blessed” by the path her life has taken since then.

In a podcast interview The Art of Kindness Francia was asked about her greatest act of kindness.

“Besides donating a kidney, what? It was definitely a personal choice. It was definitely just an act of kindness, no matter what the rumors are,” she responded.

Reflecting on the negativity that often accompanies acts of heroism, Francia compared her situation to that of other historical icons.

“Listen, we experience this with every hero in the world. I'm sure there were negative things written about Martin Luther King after he passed away. I've put myself in a position where people are interested in my personal life – I wish it wasn't so crazy. Sometimes people need a distraction from their own lives. If I'm that distraction, I guess I just need to be grateful that people care about my feelings. Yes, it was something I did because I really felt inspired to do it and I've been blessed ever since,” she added.

Since the surgery, Francia has experienced a journey marked by positive changes.

“My first audition was two weeks after surgery, it was 'Grown-ish' and I booked to go. Since then, I have been on my own journey. It definitely did a lot for me. My favorite thing is that I get to talk to other donors,” he said.

The artist admitted late last year that she and Selena “haven’t talked much” since the transplant because “they needed time apart,” but they are slowly rebuilding their friendship.
