The messages of the summer season for the 14 regional airports of Fraport Greece are optimistic, as the tourist flows to several islands of Greece are increasing.
According to estimates and if no external negative conditions arise, Fraport Greece, as its executives claim, can recover this year and in the whole year 80% – 85% of the traffic of 2019.
In 2019, the 14 regional airports handled, for the first time, more than 30 million passengers, while in 2020 there was a large decrease (-71.4%), with 8.61 million passengers, due to the pandemic.
The higher the summer, the lower the “gap” compared to 2019
The indications for this summer season show a significant recovery of passenger traffic and a reduction of the “gap” compared to 2019.
In the first four months of the year, passenger traffic at the 14 regional airports of Fraport Greece amounted to 2.71 million passengers, compared to 3.35 million passengers in the corresponding period of 2019, ie a decrease of 19.1%.
However, in April, passenger traffic amounted to 1.4 million passengers, compared to 1.43 million passengers in 2019, showing a decrease of only 2.4%.
In fact, in some airports, such as Kos, Rhodes, Zakynthos and Corfu, passenger traffic was increased compared to 2019!
According to aviation market analysts, most Fraport airports are characterized by intense seasonality, with the result that the summer season is a “barometer” for the performance of the year.
Apart from the Greek AEGEAN and SKY express, companies with a significant “footprint” in recent years at the 14 regional airports are the French Air France and the German Lufthansa, through Eurowings.
The CEO of Fraport AG, Dr. also appeared optimistic for this year. Stefan Schulte, during the annual general meeting of the German group, stressed that “the worst is over for the aviation industry, we are preparing for a remarkable recovery.”
On the other hand, in the aviation sector, everyone avoids any “malfunctions” at the peak of the tourist season, due to lack of staff, with cancellations and cancellations of flights to central European airports that may affect Greece and any escalation of geopolitical uncertainties.
