Fraport suspends operations in Russia – Hermès ‘temporarily closes’ stores

The airport management company Fraport is suspending its activity in St. Petersburg due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it was announced today in Frankfurt.

“There is no excuse for Russian forces to attack Ukraine. We condemn this war as an armed attack on a sovereign state and its people – as a clear violation of international law, which causes untold suffering to the people of Ukraine,” he said. Fraport CEO Stefan Sulte.

The company has been a minority shareholder in Northern Capital Gateway since 2009, which operates Pukovo Airport in St. Petersburg. It currently owns 25% of NCG, but has no staff on the ground or engaged in any other activity at the Russian airport. In addition, the German company said in a statement, Fraport does not conduct any business in Russia – not even in terms of transfer of know-how or advice. Air traffic rights are regulated by the Russian government, as is the case internationally, but also in Germany, the statement said.

The luxury goods group Hermès, “very concerned about the current situation in Europe”, has decided to “temporarily close” its stores in Russia and suspend its commercial activities from tonight, as the company announced on its LinkedIn page.

“With regret we have decided to temporarily close our stores in Russia and to suspend all our commercial activities from the night of March 4,” the French group wrote on its LinkedIn page. “We will continue to support our teams there.”

The group has three stores in Russia, one of which is in the famous Gum department store in Red Square, and employs about 60 people in the country.

Many international companies have already announced the suspension of their activities in the country, mainly the Swedish giant Ikea, which reported yesterday to the French Agency that “the war has a huge human impact and also translates into a serious disruption of the production and trade chain”.

Groups suspending operations in Russia following the invasion of Ukraine include the microprocessor company Intel, the Airbnb resort, ExxonMobil and Apple, Boeing and Ford.
