Ledger hardware wallet users have started receiving phishing emails in which scammers are trying to convince them to activate the so-called Ledger Clear Signing security feature before October 31st.
The fraudulent mailing states that, starting November 1, the Clear Signing feature will become mandatory for Ledger users. If they do not activate it by the specified date, they will not be able to continue using their device. The email states that this feature is necessary to protect assets from phishing attacks that are becoming more sophisticated.
Fraudsters claim that Clear Signing will allow you to view and verify all data directly on the Ledger device before confirming any transaction. When transferring crypto assets, interacting with smart contracts or using decentralized applications, Clear Signing will help you clarify the recipient’s address, transfer amount and commissions. And without this function, there is a high risk of signing transactions blindly, the authors of the letter worry.
To activate the fake security feature, scammers provided email recipients with a malicious link that redirected to a non-Ledger URL. Therefore, users should not follow suspicious links to avoid leaking personal data to scammers and losing their crypto assets.
Last year, Ledger identified a counterfeit version of the Ledger Connect Kit and was able to remove the malicious code. In November 2023, Ledger users lost 16.8 BTC due to a fraudulent Ledger Live app in the Microsoft Store.
