Free distribution of books attracts a line of readers in the Paulista region

THE Avenida Paulista in São Paulo, became the stage for an unprecedented literary initiative promoted by TikTok . The platform is distributing it for free 100 thousand books until December 17th, in an action that seeks to contribute to reversing the downward trend in the number of readers in Brazil.

The initiative called Livraria dos Mais Assistidos no TikTok attracted a significant number of reading enthusiasts and formed a large queue around the Conjunto Nacional building. Among the available titles are popular works such as “I’m Still Here”, which inspired the film starring actress Fernanda Torres, “A Biblioteca da Meia-Noite” and “É Assim que Acaba”.

The project comes at a critical moment for literature in the country. According to research Portraits of Reading Brazil has lost more than 6 million readers in the last four years. “I got three (books) that I really wanted, and two for my best friend”, commented one of the campaign participants.

When asked about their reading habits, respondents revealed that they read between ten and 30 books per year and a student mentioned that the number ended up being influenced by preparation for the entrance exam.
