Developers from Facebook suddenly remembered their advertising project called Check in for free Internet, which is more than ten years old. The essence of this project is to provide access to free Wi-Fi – in various shops, cafes, restaurants, hotels and other entertainment establishments, additional routers are installed, which give the visitor free access to the network in exchange for a subscription or check-in. That is, the user just needs to subscribe to the institution’s Instagram account or mark himself on the Facebook page to automatically access the Internet.
True, this initiative has certain limitations. Firstly, the institution needs to purchase a router of a specific brand, since not every hardware component is suitable. At the same time, the device still needs to be additionally configured – the developers themselves assure that it is simple and takes no more than twenty minutes in time. Secondly, at the moment, access to free Wi-Fi will be needed only in extreme cases, because all over the world there is quite high-quality fast 4G Internet, and the world is gradually preparing for 5G. And thirdly, Facebook is famous for its love of personal user data, which can alienate many.
And in Russia, most likely, this function will not be in demand due to the current legislation – since 2014, all users who connect to a public Wi-Fi network must identify themselves by passport, mobile phone number or through State Services. Open distribution of the Internet without identification is punishable by very impressive fines, which means that Russian establishments simply will not be able to provide Wi-Fi only for a subscription, it will be necessary to additionally require one of three identification options.
