Federal deputy Marcelo Freixo (PSB) is close to confirming Cesar Maia (PSDB), councilor and former mayor of Rio de Janeiro as his deputy on the ticket that will run for the Rio de Janeiro government in 2022. On Maia’s side, the alliance is given taken for granted, with the exception that an order sent by the National Executive may make the agreement unfeasible. “If the election were today, this would be the ticket”, says a source.
The mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes (PSD), has his eye on the agreement. He sponsors the candidacy of former president of the OAB, Felipe Santa Cruz. His allies told CNN that he is surprised by the movement of Rodrigo Maia, president of the PSDB in Rio. Paes and his political group stitched together with Maia all the moves they made, since the departure of the DEM to the PSD in 2021. And now they hoped that the former president of the Chamber of Deputies would support Santa Cruz for the government of Rio. In order to convince Paes, the central piece in the assembly of the ticket, the PT is in the field to try to articulate a conversation between the mayor and former president Lula.
On the PSB side, the atmosphere is one of expectation for a positive official response from Cesar Maia. This Wednesday (08) Rodrigo Maia met with Carlos Siqueira, national president of the PSB.
THE CNN , Siqueira stated that he sees no problem in the fact that the toucans are supporting the candidacy of Simone Tebet (MDB) for the presidency – the PSB nominated Geraldo Alckmin as vice president of Lula’s (PT) ticket. “It’s natural, each party has its preference for the Planalto, and the states act differently,” he said.
According to Siqueira, the arrival of Cesar Maia would be “fundamental” to “expand Freixo’s candidacy to the center”. “Maia brings the important component of administrative experience to a candidacy that has no experience in the Executive”, he said.
Despite having made their careers in different political spectrums – Freixo, on the left, and Maia, on the center and right – the two had little contact in Rio’s politics. The federal deputy was first elected to public office in 2006, near the end of Maia’s third term in Rio’s mayor.
Maia, in turn, was from the PFL and DEM and, if confirmed as Freixo’s deputy in the PSB, he will campaign for Lula, from whom he was especially disaffected in his last term, when the PT was already president.
At PT, Maia’s arrival was celebrated. Party members say that Freixo needs to increase his votes in the Baixada Fluminense – which will not necessarily be fulfilled with the arrival of Maia, with a captive electorate in the capital. But the party counts on the former mayor’s high level of knowledge in the electorate. “There is a survey that shows Cesar Maia remembered by voters to run for governor of Rio, always with a good level of votes. He arrives to transfer votes to the ticket”, said João Maurício, president of the PT in Rio.
Cesar Maia was wanted by the CNN , but declined to comment on the possible deal. Freixo said that “there are conversations” for the former mayor to be his deputy, but did not give details.
