French film legend Jean-Louis Trintignant dies at 91

the french actor Jean-Louis Trintignant whose career launched with that of Brigitte Bardot with the 1956 film “And God Created Woman”, died on Friday (17) at the age of 91, said his ex-wife Nadine Trintignant.

“He was a special person,” Nadine told BFM TV.

Trintignant received the award for Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival 1969 for the film “Z”, by Costa Gavras, and an award Caesar for Best Actor in 2013 for the film “Love” by Michael Haneke.

With Jean-Pierre Léaud and Jean-Paul Belmond, now deceased, Trintignant was one of the main actors of the French Nouvelle Vague movement.

He was in more than 130 films, including the Palme d’Or winner at Cannes in 1966, “One Man, One Woman”, a film by Claude Lelouch, also famous for the soundtrack by Francis Lai.

He experienced personal tragedy in 2003 after his daughter Marie Trintignant, who was also a critically acclaimed actress, died at age 41 when she was beaten to death by her boyfriend Bertrand Cantat, leader of French band Noir Désir.

Cantat was convicted of manslaughter and released from prison in 2007.
