French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said today that “all the evidence” was in favor of a “fierce” Russian military strike on Ukraine.
“Is there any evidence of a violent attack by Russian forces on Ukraine? Yes, this is true, it is possible, it is possible (to be done) quickly,” the French diplomat told France 5.
“This lurks,” he added, stressing, however, that at the moment there are no signs of an imminent Russian intervention.
“Did President Putin make his business decisions or not? In my opinion, there is no indication of that today,” he said.
Russia has ruled out a diplomatic solution to the crisis between Moscow and the West, focusing on Ukraine, and has announced the end of some military exercises, at a time when fears of an impending invasion are reaching a climax.
“There is an unacceptable military situation with an escalating escalation,” Jean-Yves Le Drian noted, however.
“It is urgent for all of us to stop the escalation.”
According to him, “Vladimir Putin wants to prevent Ukraine from having its sovereignty, its integrity.”
“If by chance, the sovereignty, part of the sovereignty or integrity of Ukraine is challenged by a major intervention by Russia, then there will be serious consequences, massive sanctions,” he said.
France has not yet called on its 1,000 nationals in Ukraine to leave the country. But the families of embassy staff who want to “return” can do so, said Jean-Yves Le Drian.
“We will take immediate decisions at the slightest risk,” he added. Paris only recommends, for the time being, to the French not to visit Ukraine.
