The conditions are no longer in place for the fight against the Islamists to continue in Mali and French President Emanuel Macron has called for a reorganization of French forces in the region, Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said tonight.
“If the conditions are no longer met so that we can act in Mali, which is clearly happening, then we will continue to fight side by side with the Sahel countries,” the French foreign minister told France 5 television.
According to Le Drian, there are now about 1,000 mercenaries of the Russian security company Wagner in Mali and their goal is to “protect the junta” of Bamako.
France and its European partners in the Barcane mission in Mali say the junta has invited mercenaries to various countries in sub-Saharan Africa but also to Libya and Syria. Paris considers their presence another factor of instability and is “incompatible” with the action of French soldiers and their allies against the jihadists. The Mali junta, for its part, denies any connection to Wagner but says it is cooperating militarily with Russia.
France, which has been fighting jihadist groups in the Sahel for nine years, may announce its withdrawal from Mali in the coming days. However, she states that she intends to continue her struggle in other Sahel countries.
