French Minister for European Affairs v Melanson on ‘disobedience in Europe’

In an interview with the newspaper Libération, the French Deputy Foreign Minister in charge of European Affairs, Clement Bonn, argues that the election of a prime minister in the upcoming parliamentary elections, whose line will be completely opposite to that of the president, may have catastrophic consequences for both France, as well as for Europe.

Referring in particular to the “European disobedience” advocated by the “People’s Union” under Melanson, he noted that “it is tantamount to calling on France’s partners to align with its agenda, without any consultation, negotiation or desire for compromise”, stressing that this “indicates arrogance but also weakness”. “Talking about disobedience is the manifestation of someone who does not want to rule. When we rule we change the law and life,” said the French deputy foreign minister, noting that “this is the difference between the left and the far left.” According to him, “the former assumes the exercise of responsibilities with its difficulties, the latter advocates unrest and anarchy.”

Regarding the claims of French left-wing officials that many countries, including France, regularly violate European law, he states that a violation of a rule is not the same as disobedience, noting that “anti-Europeans confuse freedom and liberalism. ”

Asked, finally, what does the fact that almost two thirds of the electorate vote for parties proposing “overthrow” show for France, he answers:

“We are facing a crisis of the western democracies, which has taken various forms: Trumpism in the United States, Brexit in the United Kingdom, Lega and M5S in Italy, LFI (Melanson) and RN (Le Pen) in France. The LREM (Macron) must be less cowardly and even clearer about what we are doing in practice to change Europe. ” In his view, “the reassuring thing is that when French citizens had to make meaningful choices, such as in 2017 and 2022, the most radical choices, such as Frexit, were rejected.”
