French PM: Government to reach out to potential partners to secure parliamentary support

LAST UPDATE: 23.59

French Prime Minister Elizabeth Bourne said tonight that her government would “get to work” from tomorrow Monday to reach out to potential partners to secure a majority in parliament and ensure the stability of the eurozone’s second-largest economy.

“I have confidence in all of us and in our sense of responsibility,” Bourne said. “We want to continue to protect you and ensure your safety,” she told voters.

We will respect the election result but it poses dangers for the country, Bourne said today.

Noting that the French people are urging the country’s political leadership to tackle their problems with a sense of unity, the French prime minister said the faction’s side, led by President Emanuel Macron, as a “central political force” would seek a “majority action” with “various sensitivities”.

He also stressed that in the coming days the government will submit its proposals on a number of issues such as strengthening the purchasing power of citizens, tackling health problems, education, etc.

French President Emmanuel Macron and his allies lost an absolute majority in the National Assembly in the second round of parliamentary elections. Along with the majority, they are losing control of the reform agenda that Macron wanted to promote.

Many government officials failed to get re-elected today. Bourne itself was marginally elected, with 52.46%.
