French police arrested a 26-year-old man of Ukrainian and Russian nationality after he detonated explosives inside a hotel room north of Paris, near the French capital’s airport. The information was released by the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) this Wednesday (5).
According to authorities, the man was rescued by firefighters after “suffering significant burns following an explosion”.
The police carried out searches inside the room and located products and materials intended for the manufacture of explosive devices.
A source told Reuters that the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office is working with the French domestic spy agency and has opened an investigation into the case. The man is suspected of participating in a terrorist conspiracy.
The Ukrainian and Russian embassies in Paris responded and have not yet commented on the case.
Paris Charles de Gaulle airport, near where the man was arrested, said operations were not affected.
France is on high alert for the threat, with less than two months to go before the start of the Paris Olympics. The Games are taking place in a complex geopolitical scenario, with wars in Ukraine and Gaza, and represent a major security challenge.
Last month, French security services thwarted the first planned attack on the Games, with the arrest of an 18-year-old Chechen man suspected of preparing an attack at the Saint-Etienne football stadium.
