French President Emmanuel Macron calls for a “ceasefire” in Gaza

The French president Emmanuel Macron called today to “work towards a ceasefire” between Israel and Hamas at the start of the humanitarian conference on Gaza Strip held in Paris. “More immediately we must work to protect civilians. For this a humanitarian pause is needed very quickly and we must work towards a ceasefire,” Macron stressed. “That should be possible,” he added.

Macron stressed that it is “absolutely necessary” to protect them civilians in the Gaza Strip and that there cannot be two standards regarding the protection of human life. “It is not negotiable,” said the French president. Although Macron reiterated that Israel “has the right to defend itself and the duty to protect its citizens,” he reiterated that the Israeli government also has a “responsibility (…) to respect the law and protect civilians.” “The fight against terrorism can never be done without rules”he estimated.

The French president also underlined that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is worsening “more and more every day.” The ambition of the conference being held today in Paris is to “assess the needs in money, in materials”, noted Macron, while called for aid to be coordinated and organized in a very specific way so that it can be provided. At the same time, the French president announced that his country will increase its aid to the Palestinians from 20 million euros to 100 million euros in 2023.
