French press condemns Osman Kavala’s life sentence in Turkey

A large portion of the French press reports today on the sentence of Osman Kavala to life imprisonment.

“Businessman Osman Kavala has been sentenced to life in prison after a mock trial in Turkey,” Le Monde reported, noting that the Council of Europe has already launched a breach of European law over Turkey’s refusal to comply from 2019. by a decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) requesting the release of Osman Kavalas. According to the newspaper, Strasbourg judges had ruled that his prolonged detention, without trial, betrayed Ankara’s desire to “silence him” and “bring with him all human rights defenders”. By refusing to comply with the ECHR decision, the Turkish government, which has signed the European Convention on Human Rights, is violating its international obligations, the newspaper concludes.
