French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal voted in the first round of the French parliamentary elections on Sunday (30).
France is closer than ever to having a far-right government since the Second World War, with the anti-immigration National Union party rising in opinion polls ahead of two-phase legislative elections on June 30 and June 7. July.
President Emmanuel Macron dissolved parliament and called elections after his centrist alliance was defeated by the National Rally in the European elections.
At 35, Attal became France’s youngest post-war prime minister when Macron appointed him in January.
Sometimes nicknamed “baby Macron”, Attal faces the difficult task of saving his boss’s presidency and political movement.
Disaffected voters across the country are shifting their support to the far right and a new left-wing alliance, angered by Macron’s policies and personality, with the president often seen as arrogant and out of touch with daily struggles.
Attal is France’s first openly gay prime minister.
