Frenchman who allegedly drugged wife for gang rape may have trial postponed

Dominique Pelicot, 71, who is on trial in France accused of drugging his wife and inviting dozens of strangers to rape her at their home over nearly a decade, is suffering from abdominal pain and may have to postpone his court testimony, his lawyer said on Monday (9).

According to prosecutors, Dominique Pelicot is accused of offering sex to his wife, Gisele Pelicot, on a website and filming the abuse. Fifty other men, accused of abusing Gisele, who was unconscious due to drugs, are also on trial.

Dominique Pelicot’s hearing was originally scheduled for Tuesday (10) at a court in Avignon.

Beatrice Zavarro, Dominique Pelicot’s lawyer, said he has been feeling unwell since Friday night (6) and may be suffering from kidney colic and a urinary tract infection.

Zavarro said, however, that Pelicot wants to appear in court to explain himself and apologize to his wife.

All defendants face up to 20 years in prison if found guilty.

Due to drugs, Gisele Pelicot was completely unaware of the rapes, which took place at her home in the southern French town of Mazan, until police told her about them four years ago, according to her lawyers.

The trial, which began on September 2, is expected to last until December and will not be held behind closed doors, as is customary to protect victims of sex crimes. Gisele Pelicot, 72, said she wanted the case to be made public to raise awareness about sexual abuse and drug-induced blackouts, her lawyers said.
