A self-portrait of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo with her husband, artist Diego Rivera, was sold at auction this Tuesday (16) for $34.9 million (about R$190 million), the highest price ever paid for a painting by a Latin American artist.
Completed in 1949, five years after Frida’s death, “Diego y yo” (Diego and I) was auctioned off at an auction at historic Sotheby’s in New York.
“This is one of Kahlo’s most important works to come up for auction and we’re excited to have her at Sotheby’s,” said Oliver Barker, senior director of the auction house as he introduced the work.
The painting shows the artist with teary eyes and her hair down, with a portrait of Rivera with a third eye above her eyebrow.
Frida, who spent long periods in bed after a traffic accident in her youth, produced around 200 paintings, sketches and drawings – mostly self-portraits – in which she transformed her misfortune into works of bold colors and emblematic strength.
She achieved international fame after her death in 1954 and, after the 1970s, became a feminist icon.
