“Friends” actor points to racism behind the scenes: “toxic environment”

Actor Steve Park, 62, reported cases of racism against yellow people behind the scenes of “Friends” recordings. He was present in some episodes of the second and third seasons of the American series.

In an interview with the “Pod Meets World” podcast, the comedian described a toxic and uncomfortable environment for Asian actors in production. Park is the son of South Korean immigrants and featured an episode suffered by James Hong.

“At that time, I felt it was a kind of toxic environment,” said the actor. “James Hong was the actor who was also in the episode with me, and [o assistente de direção] I was calling him to the set and essentially saying, ‘Where the hell is the eastern guy? Bring the eastern guy ‘. ”

Park also states that this kind of behavior was normal in Hollywood in 1997, when he participated in the sitcom.

“This is greater than this program. It was not the first time this happened, ”he said. “That was normal in Hollywood in 1997, I suppose it was. And no one felt the need to correct this or say something about it. So this is the normal behavior. ”

The actor is part of the cast of “Mickey 17” new film by Oscar-winning South Korean director Bong Joon-ho (“parasite”). In the plot, a collaborator is sent in a human expedition to colonize the icy world of Niflheim. After a iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of its intact memories.

The production is starring Robert Pattinson (“Dusk”), Mark Ruffalo (“Avengers”), Naomi Ackie (“Finque twice”) and Toni Collette (“Hereditary”).
