Sometimes life is stranger than fiction and Johannes Brunette and Rhoda Schutte, who met almost 50 years ago, know it perfectly, because this kind of romantic fantasy story is their reality.
The couple met as children 45 years ago in their hometown of Krugersdorp, located in South Africa. Johannes saw Rhoda at the neighborhood public swimming pool and worked up the courage to ask if he could walk her to her house. That same day, Johannes’ brother also met Rhoda’s sister, Annamarie.
However, Rhoda moved out of town, so they drifted apart and made their own separate lives and went decades without seeing each other. The funny thing is how life turns around and 5 years ago they met again and started dating.
Johannes was married for many years, but his wife passed away, leaving him a widower and raising their three children alone. This affected him a lot and he assures that he was “crying and lamenting” for four years, without being able to give direction to his life, until his sister, who is a friend of Annamarie, arranged a date with Rhoda, who was also married, but she divorced several years before reuniting with Johannes.
Although they met when Rhoda was nine years old, she says that, at times, she did wonder what had become of him. Today, they are happier than ever.
However, this is not to say that there weren’t some initial insecurities. Rhoda didn’t know what to think about dating someone she had known as a child.
I wondered what Johannes would think of me. I am tall and a bit chubby. When we met, he was like, ‘Wow, you’re tall!’
They have a very happy and loving relationship, and they currently have plans to get married in the future.
Never in a million years would I have imagined that we would be together, but I am glad to have him in my life again.
