From cross training to holistic distiplines: the main fitness trends of 2021

During 2020, between lockdown and social distancing, we invested time and resources in the digital platforms of gyms, in tools to be used at home such as anklets and yoga mats, without forgetting professional equipment such as the TRX. The home workout will certainly not be a trend destined to stop immediately. Indeed, it says a lot about how the way of doing sport has changed and what awaits us in this 2021.

Between live shows, live lessons or videos that can be followed on demand, the time to devote to sporting activity is perfectly integrated into the normal routine.

Training has become much more accessible especially in terms of timing. In fact, time is one of the excuses that has always kept many people away from the gym.

TO START 2021

The most recommended activities are those that help relax muscle tension and help you sleep. They have a positive effect on blood circulation, neuronal activity and the increased release of endorphins. «The trends of the moment are Strength, i.e. workouts that aim to increase strength, also giving flexibility and tone, Yoga with variants that give strength, balance, endurance and stability e Cycle. The first two require only a mat and a pair of dumbbells, the last requires a more demanding tool but which, for an increasing number of people, is becoming the norm to keep at home, including it in the style of furniture “, says Manuel Del Rossi, Live Trainer of Revolution, the digital platform of Virgin Active.

SPORT AS A TEAM BUILDING

According to a survey carried out by Urban Sports Club among the members of the fitness platform, smart working has reduced the sharing between colleagues to exclusively work issues, effectively eliminating relational exchanges. That’s why sport could become a ‘team building activity to increase motivation and productivity. If smart working will continue to be a necessary way of working, certainly corporate wellbeing will be an aspect to be strengthened. “Through our courses and customizable solutions, we offer a dynamic approach to fitness and corporate wellbeing, to allow teams to stay together while keeping fit, with sports activities that rekindle motivation, strengthen team spirit, help concentration and stimulate healthy competition too, ”he explains Filippo Santoro, Managing Director for Italy of Urban Sports Club.

HOLISTIC DISCIPLINES
This year yoga, pilates and meditation have been a discovery for many, driven by the need to try to build a new dimension in which to root and find more awareness. The holistic disciplines, which connect body and mind, have been and will continue to be an emotional comfort with positive benefits on stress, on the immune system, on the knowledge and perception of one’s body.

HIIT WORKOUT
High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) was very popular in 2020 and will continue to be in 2021. It allows you to burn calories quickly and takes much less time than regular exercise, generating appeal especially in busy people. It is also very affordable to do at home, requiring little space and limited equipment.

CROSS TRAINING
This approach allows to constantly improve the results. The trainer talks about it Jill Cooper in the new book written together with the nutritionist Sacha Sorrentino, Never say diet. Morphological slimming. «The body is always trying to adapt and reduce energy expenditure. That is why when he adapts to the new stimulus, it will become increasingly difficult to trick him into increasing the result in terms of energy consumption, strength and muscle power, ”explains Jill. «Cross training, on the other hand, alternates 2 or maximum 3 techniques per week to keep the body always on the alert. The alternation of different types of training ensures that the body does not become addicted and never manages to adapt completely to training stimuli “.

The cross training method involves dividing the workouts within the day and over the days of the week. For example, alternating 3 days of workout with an off day and always dedicating 20 minutes in the morning or evening to fluid disciplines such as yoga, stretching and meditation.
