If the future of the car market is driving without the participation of the driver himself, then at the moment General Motors can be called one of the leaders in the industry. The fact is that last week, representatives of the brand announced the launch of the upgraded Super Cruise driver assistance system, which is, in fact, a second level autopilot (on the SAE autonomous driving capability scale). And if earlier Super Cruise was the most common adaptive cruise control with a lane keeping function, now the technology has received a really important feature – changing lanes between lanes.
In the upgraded version, the vehicle will use map data and GPS information to accurately and, most importantly, safely position the vehicle in the desired lane. In case the car needs to change lanes, the advanced autopilot of the second level will do it on its own, taking into account traffic conditions, obstacles and vehicle speed. True, it is worth noting that so far we are talking exclusively about driving on highways and locations with a sufficient database of cartographic data. Moreover, on vehicles equipped with the upgraded Super Cruiser, the Google Maps application will select the routes that can be taken on autopilot.
Considering that in the USA, for example, there are more than 320 thousand kilometers of tracks, the function will be really useful to many users. At the same time, there was also a towing function on autopilot, which is available exclusively for SUVs and pickups – on a sedan, a car can only be towed in manual mode.
The redesigned Super Cruise Autopilot, due in 2022, will be available on the 2022 Cadillac Escalade, CT4 and CT5, the Chevrolet Silverado, as well as GMC’s Sierra and the new Hummer EV. In 2023, when the manufacturer has released all the upcoming models, the technology will be implemented on 22 cars.
