To the Host to COP30 in Belém, capital of Pará, between November 10 and 21, the Brazil assumes a role of protagonism in the climate schedule . The event will bring together in the Brazilian Amazon some of the main global leaders to discuss new efforts to curb global warming and its consequences.
However, it is not just for receiving the 30th edition of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change that our country is highlighted: Brazil is the largest holder of tropical forest area in the world thanks to the Amazon – Biome that exerts influence on the climate of the world.
“The Amazon is fundamental to the climate of the world because it has a large carbon reservoir role (one of the main greenhouse gases), which is stored in plants,” explained Pedro Luiz Côrtes, professor at the USP Institute of Energy and Environment.
“The rains that come from the Amazon region are distributed to central Brazil, descend to Paraguay, Rio Grande do Sul, Uruguay, reach north of Argentina,” said Côrtes. “It is estimated that if we didn’t have the Amazon rainforest, the global temperature could rise even more. That is, it ends up functioning as a large world air conditioner. ”
Greenpeace Brasil’s climate justice strategist Pamela Gopi also highlighted the importance of the biome: “The Amazon acts as a ‘lung of the world’, absorbing large amounts of carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. In addition to being responsible for the ‘flying rivers’, large volumes of water vapor that form on the forest and move through the air, bringing moisture to other regions of Brazil and South America. ”
But with a forest of such importance, there is also a great responsibility, as the degradation of the Amazon affects several territories.
“Deforestation is where we are most historically charged, and not only in the Amazon, but in the Cerrado, in other biomes as well. And Brazil has a key role here, because it is a country that has very high deforestation, ”said Alexandre Prado, WWF-Brazil’s climate change leader.
Energy transition
In addition to the Amazon, Brazil also stands out for the example by adopting a largely clean energy matrix, at a time when the whole world needs to make this transition urgently.
“It’s a country that has a lot to show and gain in a low carbon economy,” Prado added.
Even so, we still have challenges to be overcome: Brazil is the sixth country that most emits greenhouse gases in the world. According to Bocuhy, the ranking position is due to “emissions with burning fossil fuels, but mainly due to the burned and cattle herd emissions.”
In addition, the country continues with plans to continue to explore, consume and export fossil fuels such as oil. “This represents a growing goal of financing a matrix that is against global sustainability,” added Bocuhy.
