From favorite to forgotten: “Attack of the Dogs” takes home a figurine

As usual, the ceremony of Oscars 2022 brought several surprises. Among them, the award for the favorite of the night, “Attack of the Dogs”, in only one category. Out of 12 nominations, the feature Netflix she was only consecrated with Jane Campion for Best Director, making her the third woman in history to win that statuette.

It was the director’s second nomination. The first was in 1994 for “The Piano”, but ended up losing to Steven Spielberg, who won for “Schindler’s List”. The filmmakers clashed again this year, but Campion prevailed. Spielberg was running for the remake of “Amor, Sublime Amor”.

“Attack of the Dogs” was nominated for Best Picture, Director (Jane Campion), Actor (Benedict Cumberbatch), Supporting Actor (Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee), Supporting Actress (Kirsten Dunst), Adapted Screenplay, Production Design, Sound, Photography, Editing and Original Soundtrack.

The western plot was the big bet of the night, leading the nominations. Until then, it was the season’s biggest winner in major categories, with four awards at the Critics Choice Awards, three awards at the Golden Globes, two at the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) and more.

The most anticipated award of the night, for Best Picture, ended up with “In the Rhythm of the Heart”, as well as Adapted Screenplay; Will Smith won Best Actor for his role in “King Richard: Raising Champions” and Troy Kotsur for Supporting Actor for “A Beat of the Heart”; Jessica Chastain took home the statuette for Best Actress for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and Ariana DeBose for Supporting Actress in “Love, Sublime Amor”.

While, in the technical categories, “Attack of the Dogs” lost all to “Dune”, by Dennis Villeneuve, which has Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson and a great cast.

For the third time in four years, Netflix topped the nominations. “Roma”, in 2019, and “Mank”, in 2021, were the highlights of the respective editions, with 10 mentions each. Jane Campion’s feature scored an even higher number this year, but received fewer awards.

“Roma” won three statuettes, Best Foreign Film, Direction and Photography; and “Mank” two, Best Art Direction and Photography.

The streaming service has been gaining traction in recent years, but it seems it still hasn’t caught on with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

In addition to “Dog Attacks”, ten other Netflix productions competed for a statuette, they are: “The Lost Daughter”, “Don’t Look Up”, “Parallel Mothers”, “Tick, Tick… ​​Boom!”, “The The Mitchell Family and the Revolt of the Machines”, “A Sabiá Sabiazinha”, “Where I Live”, “Audible”, “Three Songs for Benazir” and “A Mão de Deus”.

“Attack dos Dogs” is an adaptation of the 1967 book of the same name, by Thomas Savage, and follows two brothers who run the family farm. When George gets married, Phil wages a war of threats against his brother’s new wife and son. The teenager is frowned upon by the farmer, who makes it clear that he is not welcome on the property.
