The Belo Horizonte Zoo has a new resident: a male gorilla, named Bu-Bu coming from Hungary. The 27-year-old animal does not have puppies and is looking for a partner for the procreation of the species. Bu-Bu will be quarantined for 30 to 40 days and after this period it will be possible to visit it.
The primate arrived in BH through a partnership between the Municipal Parks and Zoobotany Foundation and the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums, with the aim of restructuring the local gorilla group valuing the welfare of animals.
THE The gorillas’ original enclosure was renovated for their arrival being fully approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA). Sixteen public agents from the mammal, veterinary hospital, nutrition and animal welfare sectors were involved in the process. Among them:
- Four veterinarians
- Five biologists
- Five environmental services agents
- Two animal care assistants
The BH Zoo follows the recommendations and guidelines of the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the European Endangered Species Program (EEP/EAZA).
Silverback
Gorilla groups are formed by silverback (alpha male) adult females and young individuals and babies of both sexes. Two of the young gorillas, born at the Belo Horizonte zoo, had already reached sexual maturity and, over time, began to confront their father (silverback) a normal and healthy behavior in gorilla society, which could become accentuated in the presence of three females.
THE CNN contacted Animália Park and according to them, four male gorillas arrived from Belo Horizonte Zoo from the same family. The change was made to prevent younger males, close to breeding age, from competing for females. The gorillas arrived at Animália Park, in São Paulo, went through the quarantine period and at the end of July this year, they were released to the public.
