From journalist to premier: remember the lies of Boris Johnson

For years, the Prime Minister of Great Britain, Boris Johnson, has entertained people a lot. Mostly lying. Until I stumbled upon one of them. He lost his job when no one else found him funny.

Remember the lies and controversies:

  • 1988 : was fired from The Times for fabricating a statement by his godfather, academic Colin Lucas, about King Edward II of England.
    But the former EU chief told The Guardian that the story was a lie;
  • 1991 : Still working as a journalist, he wrote an article alleging that the European Union had rejected Italian demands on a small minimum width for male condoms. But the former EU chief told The Guardian that the story was a lie;
  • 2002 : said that Africa needed the “strength of the old colonizers”, as it was messy, with “many people dying”, and that “the best would be if the old colonial powers came back in their direction”;
  • 2004 : was fired as a minister for lying about a four-year extramarital affair;
  • 2007 : compared Hillary Clinton to a sadistic hospice nurse;
  • 2013 : hid a daughter out of wedlock. She was only recognized after a court decision;
  • 2016 : propagated lies in the Brexit campaign by saying that the UK was sending £350 million a week to the European Union. The value was much lower;
  • 2018 : violated conflict-of-interest rules in the ministerial code and started a journalistic column just three days after stepping down as secretary of foreign affairs;
  • 2019 : broke the law by shutting down Parliament for five weeks before the Brexit deadline;
  • 2019 : lied when saying that Brexit was “done”, despite negotiations continuing until a deal was struck the following year;
  • 2022 : broke the promise not to raise taxes and raised national insurance;
  • 2022 : lied to parliament about parties during lockdown. He was fined by the police for attending his birthday party, violating his own Covid-19 laws.
