From Sean Connery to Ennio Morricone: the “greats” who left us in 2020

In the annus horparmi 2020, the one that swept the life of the past by reducing it to a cut-out and increasingly opaque memory, many artists have left us in silence, often preventing us from celebrating their memory due to the restrictions imposed by Covid. Colleagues dressed in masks and with tears in their eyes who approached the lectern during the funeral of Gigi Proietti, who disappeared on his eightieth birthday, however, remain the example of how the deepest affection does not vanish even in the midst of a pandemic but, on the contrary, is strengthened to become sharper, more penetrating.

Together with many Italian artists of cinema, music and literature such as Ennio Morricone, whose legacy is now a milestone in the history of world cinema; Stefano D’Orazio, historical lyricist and drummer of Pooh; Franca Valeri, brilliant example of skill and irony; is Alberto Arbasino, one of the few intellectuals to have taken our language and broken it down to create masterpieces that will forever stand the test of time, the largest number of this year’s farewells are for Hollywood’s holy monsters: from Kirk Douglas, who remained hand in hand with his wife Anne Buydens until the last day, a Olivia De Havilland, historian Melania Wilkes of Gone With the Wind who died at 104 at her home in Paris without having had the time (or the good fortune) to comment on the controversy surrounding the temporary removal of the title from the HBO Max catalog; from Sean Connery, the first living sex symbol to bring men and women together, a Ian Holm, which for many will be just the Bilbo of Lord of the Rings, but for others it will also remain the Sam Mussabini of Moments of glory.

The biggest pains are, however, for artists who have left too soon. As Chadwick Baseman, the first black superhero in cinema history struck down by colon cancer with which he had been battling for several years; or Ezio Bosso, the composer and conductor who was unable to make it to the age of 50 due to the worsening of his brain neoplasm; or again, Irrfar Khan, the Indian actor of Life of Pi who surrenders to a colon infection at age 53; is Naya Rivera, the actress became famous thanks to the role of Santana in the series Glee and drowned in Lake Piru after rescuing her son in a boat. Too many names to remember, in the hope that their faces will continue to arouse tenderness and melancholy in us.
