From the cinema shooter to the Park Maniac: see the situation of people arrested for famous crimes

Former medical student Mateus da Costa Meira, who killed three people and injured others in a cinema at Shopping Morumbi, in São Paulo, was released after 25 years in prison.

On November 3, 1999, the former student invaded a movie theater at Shopping Morumbi, shooting several times with a submachine gun at people who were there.

In 2004, Meira was sentenced to 120 years in prison – a sentence reduced in 2007 to 48 years and nine months in prison.

In addition to Mateus’ case, other crimes have shocked the country in recent decades, such as those of Suzane Von Richtofen, from Maniac do Parque and Goleiro Bruno, former Flamengo player.

Suzane Von Richtofen

Suzane Von Richtofen was convicted of ordering the murder of her parents, Manfred and Marísia von Richthofen, in 2002. She was 18 years old when she committed the crime.

The case shocked Brazil due to its cruelty and meticulous planning. Suzane, together with her boyfriend Daniel Cravinhos and his brother, Cristian Cravinhos, murdered her parents with blows to the head with an iron bar. She was sentenced to 39 years and 6 months in prison.

The woman was imprisoned in the Tremembé penitentiary, in the interior of São Paulo, until January 2023, when the court granted the sentence progression to an open regime.

Now 41 years old, Suzane took the public exam to join the Court of Justice of the State of São Paulo (TJSP) as a civil servant, on September 8th.

Before that, in 2023, she signed up for another public competition for a position as a telephone operator at the Avaré City Council, also in the interior of São Paulo. However, she did not show up to take the test.

Richtofen is married and lives in Bragança Paulista with her husband and son, born in January this year. She stopped using her given surname and adopted her partner’s surname.

Cravinhos Brothers

Cristian and Daniel Cravinhos were convicted of the death of Manfred and Marísia von Richthofen, Suzane’s parents, in 2006. They were sentenced to 38 years and 7 months in prison.

Although Daniel and Suzane have already managed to progress to open regime, Cristian remains imprisoned in the Tremembé II Penitentiary.

In August, a criminological examination was favorable for Cristian to obtain the benefit, attesting that the man is sorry for the crime and demonstrated empathy with the family’s suffering. However, the Public Prosecutor’s Office ruled against the progression of the sentence.

On September 17th, Cristian left P2 Tremebé to go out and soon afterwards met up with his brother Daniel.

The moment was published on Cristian’s social networks, where in the caption he wrote: “Coming home!!! Family, I love you!!”.

Park Maniac

Francisco de Assis Pereira was the greatest Brazilian serial killer who attacked and killed women on the streets of the city of São Paulo in the late 1990s.

In 1998, the motorcycle courier who became known as “Park Maniac” for the death of seven women and for raping a dozen more young people. He was sentenced to 268 years in prison.

After killing the victims, he hid their bodies in Parque do Estado, in the south zone of the capital of São Paulo. The killer remains in prison to this day.

On September 13th, journalist Ulisses Campbell released a biography about the criminal’s personality. According to the expert, Francisco Pereira could be released from prison in just four years.

“In his criminal case, the scheduled release date is August 2028. But it’s not that simple. There will be batteries of psychological exams, in addition to reports from psychiatrists for justice, indicating whether he will commit new crimes or not”, explains the author of the book “Francisco de Assis, O Maniac do Parque”.

On October 18th, a film will be released about the maniac’s story.

Elize Matsunaga

In 2012, Elize Matsunaga was arrested for murdering her husband, Marcos Kitano Matsunaga. He was shot in the head and, to try to hide the crime, Elize dismembered the body and placed Marcos’ remains in suitcases.

After an appeal by her defense, Elize was sentenced to 16 years and 3 months in prison in 2019, for triple intentional homicide, destruction and concealment of a corpse. In May 2022, she obtained the right to serve her sentence in an open regime.

Since then, she acts as a driver of applications. Elize has used her maiden name after leaving prison. The convict also made changes to her name, returning to using her maiden surname: Elize Araújo Giacomini.

Goalkeeper Bruno

Former Flamengo goalkeeper, Bruno Souza was responsible for a crime that shocked Brazil in 2010. He was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the murder of Eliza Samúdio, whose body was never found.

The conviction was determined in March 2013 and the former football player was found guilty of triple homicide, kidnapping and hiding a corpse. In July 2019, his sentence was upgraded to a semi-open regime.

Bruno has been on parole since January 2023. On September 13, he was seen while working as a furniture delivery man in the city of Rio das Ostras, on the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

Since June 2023, the former goalkeeper has been publishing content from the store on his social networks, promoting the products. Bruno was caught unloading a truck on one of the streets in the center of the city.
