From the mafia to the vegetable gardens: Treedom’s challenge continues

The National Days, those dedicated to a specific theme, be it mothers, autism, the Republic or cats, serve at least to make a point, to stop and think, to read something more about that topic.

And the November 21st it’s there National Tree Day, an opportunity to reconsider, with updated data, ours air qualitythe plant biodiversityi climate changesThe hydrogeological instability e theimportance that plants have for our survival.

Planting trees has become the first essential step to deal with the emergency and in some large metropolises there is an attempt to adopt the method of the Japanese agronomist Akira Miyawaki, that of the so-called “tiny forest”, small forests in urban contexts that can absorb, at least in part (we are talking about only 30%) the CO2 of the area.

Treedom activities

But tree planting cannot be relegated to small areas, nor be something sporadic. It takes consistency and pervasiveness. And this is what Treedom is aiming for, a B Corp that has been committed to making our planet greener for years. This works, given that now the trees planted thanks to Treedom in various parts of the world are more than 4 million and the plants are not limited to planting, but there is also an intense horticultural and beekeeping activity, with important social, as well as environmental, implications. And this can be clearly seen with the so-called “restitution” projects launched in Puglia and Campania, regarding assets confiscated from criminals. With the aim of returning these lands to the community, Treedom planted fruit trees and created vegetable gardens, the cultivation of which, in parallel with a series of educational activities, generated a process of reappropriation and reconversion.

An emblematic example is that of Masseria Ferraioli, in the municipality of Afragola, in Campania, where the largest asset confiscated from the mafia in the region is located: this land of over 120,000 square meters was once tormented by organized crime, thanks also to the support of the association Sott’n’Coppawas returned to the community. Families in the area can thus take over part of the large vegetable garden and schools have space for educational workshops immersed in nature.

A virtuous circle, in short, which could really bring about a turning point. And, to intensify the positive impact, Treedom is now launching new ones subscriptionsso that everyone can contribute with consistency and perseverance, aiming to reach the 4 and a half million trees planted in the world by the end of the year: they are 9.90 euros per month, to protect biodiversity, to fight the climate crisis and support a more just world.
