Twitter has opened up the possibility to all tip. What does it mean? That now anyone, regardless of the followers who follow him, can receive small sums from others. Maybe as proof of their support for his work and his commitment, for his creativity or for his irony. It is one of the many tools that the platform led by Jack Dorsey is putting in place to favor bottom-up monetization, that is the possibility for users who are not necessarily popular to earn something with their work on social networks.
Another, launched a few weeks ago in the United States, are for example the Audio spaces with paid tickets, which will soon also arrive in Italy.
The function of «mance» – formerly known as Tip Jar – it will be called more simply from now on Tips, and will be extended to all users, offering more payment methods, including cryptocurrencies. Those who use Twitter with Apple devices will see it immediately, in the coming weeks the functionality will also be distributed for the Android version.
«People on Twitter already insert links to their payment profiles in their bio and in their tweets to request money – they explain from San Francisco – but with Tips this activity will be more convenient and simple. On the profile of each user, in fact, there will be a special space in which to insert links to their Cash App, Patreon, Venmo accounts and other platforms in order to make payments and donations ». Those who appreciate that profile just click on it to send them a small amount of money: fund a particularly popular account, express your support for an up-and-coming comedian for his funny posts or maybe help a small business owner in a difficult time, donate to an association that is considered important or support any person or project you want.
But how does Tips work? The accounts that have activated Tips will be recognizable by thetwo banknote icon next to the “Follow” button of the profile. By clicking on that icon, the payment services or platforms that the user has activated will be listed, thus allowing you to choose which one to use for the donation. Payment services currently available: Bandcamp, Cash App, Chipper, Patreon, Razorpay, Wealthsimple Cash e Venmo. Twitter is also adding a few payment methods to the list: GoFundMe, an online fundraising platform e PicPay, a Brazilian mobile payment platform. Once you have chosen the service you want to use, the user-donor will be redirected by Twitter – which will not keep any percentage – to the app selected for payment. You can also send sums to Bitcoin using Strike, a payment application based on the Lightning Network that ensures instant and free payments globally.
