Illegal migratory flows from the Western Balkans to the European Union rose sharply in May, according to data released Monday by EU border guard Frontex.
“In May, the number of illegal immigrants detected in the region more than doubled to 12,088,” Frontex said in a statement, adding that the main countries of origin were Syria and Afghanistan, according to Reuters.
Between January and May 2022, Frontex recorded a total of 40,675 illegal crossings in the Western Balkans, almost three times as many as in the same period last year.
Thus, the route of the Western Balkans represented almost half of the total number of 86,420 illegal crossings recorded at the EU border during that period, Frontex reported.
The agency did not mention the reason for the increase in illegal migratory flows, but added that most of those identified were in the Western Balkans for some time before seeking to enter the EU.
People fleeing the war in Ukraine are not included in this figure, Frontex reported.
