The EU must be prepared to face an increase in the number of migrants entering the European bloc, with the arrival of many people from the Middle East via Belarus expected to continue for a long time, Frontex chief executive Fabrice Legger said today.
“We can see from our model risk analysis that all the factors that caused this crisis still exist and that the situation is not changing or escalating … We must be ready to deal with this situation for a long time,” he told Reuters in an interview.
He added that although Frontex has not sent troops to the field to support Poland amid escalating tensions on its border with Belarus, it is discussing the sharing of additional satellite imagery and increasing air surveillance with the country.
It also plans to help Poland repatriate migrants to their countries of origin, such as Iraq.
