Frontiers of Reporting #3: podcast exposes emotions and challenges in covering wars

CNN correspondents Américo Martins and Lourival Sant’Anna meet for a debate in the third episode of Frontiers of Reporting podcast.

Through personal accounts, they share their experiences and lessons learned from covering more than 20 global conflicts. From asymmetrical confrontations to the intensity of modern wars, they discuss the emotional and ethical impacts of reporting on complex and dangerous events.

“In war, we come into contact with the extremes of human beings: extreme selfishness, extreme cruelty, often extreme perversity and also generosity, detachment and love. Including love, freedom and dignity. And it is this contact that makes us grow as human beings. So, that’s the answer. That’s why we go to war. It’s not because we like the risk, it’s despite the risk.”

Lourival Sant’Anna

The episode not only examines the crucial role of journalism in times of war, but also sheds light on the psychological and moral impact faced by those who choose to witness and report history in times of crisis.

Report in 4 episodes

Every week, a new episode is released with a different look at war coverage. In the first, Américo Martins delves into Ukrainian life and resilience, currently one of the weapons against the Russian threat.

In the second, two unlikely characters are introduced to the public. In both stories, they saw Russian troops pass by, but what happened to each of them, and what they were like afterwards, is completely different.

In the third episode, Américo meets with Lourival Sant’Anna, an international analyst at CNN with more than 15 coverages of armed conflicts and reports in 80 countries. The two have a frank conversation about fear, preparation and journalistic responsibility in such extreme coverage.

In the fourth and final episode of the series, Américo and Lourival return to the conversation, now accompanied by Fernanda Magnotta PhD in International Relations, to discuss the history of Russia, Ukraine and the Soviet Union, as well as possible geopolitical developments of the conflict.
