When the Russians vacated Hostomel Airport, on the outskirts of Kiev, in April 2022, more than just charred and twisted iron was found there. What remained was an open wound in Ukrainian pride materialized in the destruction of one of the country’s symbols.
More than two years later, the place still holds the fuselage of the Antonov An-225 , the largest cargo plane in the world. Mryia (dreamin Ukrainian), as it is also called, was designed by the then Soviet Union to carry, on its back, the Buran space shuttle – in the middle of the space race during the Cold War.
Since its launch in the 1980s, the aircraft had been celebrated as a marvel of modern aerial engineering, regularly attracting crowds both at air shows, where it was the main attraction, and during its cargo missions around the world.
The destruction of the AN-225 was a symbolic loss at the beginning of the conflict and is one of the stories told in the second episode of the podcast “Frontiers of Reporting” .
With a documentary narrative style, which mixes investigative journalism, interviews and storytelling, the podcast takes the listener along the paths taken by Américo Martins, senior correspondent for CNN Brasil, during the trip.
