China has downplayed as “speculation” and “shadow hunting” a report in the Financial Times today that the country’s defense minister, Dong Jun, has faced a corruption investigation. The report, which cited unnamed current and former US officials, said the minister was under investigation as part of a broader anti-corruption campaign that has reached the top echelons of China’s armed forces. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning made the “shadow hunting” comment when asked about the British paper’s report during a regular briefing of accredited editors in Beijing. Mr. Dong, an admiral who had served as China’s chief of the navy’s general staff, was named defense minister in December 2023 after his predecessor Li Sangfu was suddenly removed from his post just seven months after taking office.
