To pay 13 trillion. yen (95 billion euros) four former executives of the electricity supplier Tepco were sentenced today for failing to prevent the accident at its nuclear plant Fukushima in 2011.
The decision concludes a lawsuit launched in 2012 by Tepco shareholders, asking former executives to compensate the company because they ignored warnings about potential damage which could cause a possible tsunami at the Fukushima plant.
Many appeals
It is the first time that former company executives have been found responsible for the disaster at Fukushima Daiichi, which occurred after a powerful earthquake and a tsunami.
Many appeals have been filed against Tepco, the operator of the plant, including by residents of the area who were forced to leave their homes due to the radiation, APE-MPE reports, citing AFP.
In 2019, three former executives of the company, against whom local residents had filed criminal charges, were acquitted in the first instance, but an appeal has been filed. These former executives are among the four sentenced today.
