‘Full of lies’: Palestinian diplomat reacts to Netanyahu’s speech in US

Palestinians reacted strongly on Thursday (25) to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to the US Congress on Wednesday (24).

“Total nonsense, full of big lies and supported by an absurd theatrical comedy by members of Congress who are generally ideological enemies of the Palestinian cause,” said Palestinian Deputy Foreign Minister Omar Awadallah, explaining that Netanyahu’s reception at the Congress was a blunder.

Palestinian Hebron resident Mohammed Nasser found it natural that Netanyahu would be welcomed as he was by the US Congress.

“It would be unusual if they didn’t applaud so much, because they are all Zionists, which is what is expected of global Zionists,” he said.

On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the US Congress, and in his speech, Netanyahu outlined a vague plan for a “deradicalized” post-war Gaza and praised a potential future alliance between Israel and America’s Arab allies.

Netanyahu blamed reports of starvation in Gaza on Hamas, the militant group that rules the Palestinian enclave, and insisted that Israel was protecting civilians there. He said Israel was heavily engaged in efforts to free the remaining hostages held by Hamas.

In a speech lasting about an hour and interrupted by repeated applause, Netanyahu sought to reinforce U.S. support for Israel, especially arms supplies, in the face of growing international condemnation after more than nine months of conflict in the Palestinian enclave that threatens to escalate into a wider regional conflict. More than 39,000 Palestinians have been killed and 90,403 wounded in Israel’s military offensive in Gaza since Oct. 7, the Gaza Health Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
