During a meeting convened by the Federal Public Prosecution Service (MPF) on April 30, the National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples (Funai) reported 15 deaths among indigenous people: 10 children’s deaths, 4 fetal and 1 maternal. The meeting focused on recent cases in São Gabriel da Cachoeira (AM), where there are reports of failures in health care.
Prosecutor Igor João Alves, responsible for the civil inquiry that motivated the meeting, collected detailed data and urgent measures. Civil society organizations, health secretariats and hospitals representatives participated in the meeting.
The Humaniza Feminist Humaniza Entity reported that the latest case is an indigenous baby who died on April 29. The organization also denounced abuse at the local hospital and questioned what actions are being taken to reduce child and neonatal mortality.
The Municipal Health Secretariat confirmed two maternal deaths, one of them in Manaus. According to the folder, the causes are being investigated, with suspicions of relation to Covid-19 and influenza.
The São Gabriel da Cachoeira Garrison Hospital said the problems go beyond the structure of the unit and involve the entire local health system.
The city reported that the municipality receives R $ 227 thousand per year via MAC (annual amount of costs) and faces difficulties to expand the network of basic health units. The secretary requested greater support from the Special Secretariat of Indigenous Health (Sesai) and defended the presence of the folder in local committees.
According to Funai, the data on the deaths arrived by WhatsApp and the forecast is that investigations will be completed within 120 days. The foundation also requested information about vaccination in the region and charged reports from the State Department of Health.
Sought by CNN, Funai did not comment and indicated Sesai as responsible for clarifying.
Created in 2010, Sesai is linked to the Ministry of Health and acts in the coordination of indigenous health care policy. Asked by CNN, the secretary initially said that he was unaware of the cases. The folder promised to speak until Thursday (22), but did not respond until the publication of this report.
